Celebrating Excellence Awards: When Service Also Means Preserving Our History

Celebrating Excellence 2026: The Impact of Our Heroes on the Community.

Some stories begin within an institution, but their impact reaches far beyond it.

The Celebrating Excellence Awards (CEA) represent the most significant institutional recognition program awarded by the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

These awards recognize exceptional contributions, dedication, innovation, and professionalism demonstrated by both military personnel and public service employees within the Defence Team.

Since the program’s earliest records in 2015, it has evolved to reflect and respond to Canada’s institutional priorities.

In its most recent edition, the 2026 Celebrating Excellence Awards ceremony was held at the Canadian War Museum. The current categories recognize fundamental areas such as collaboration, modernization, defence excellence, and, particularly, commitment to society.

It is in this social dimension that our community has a special reason to celebrate.

During the 2026 ceremony, the Deputy Minister & Chief of the Defence Staff Community Engagement & Volunteer Award was presented.

This award recognizes individuals or teams who demonstrate exceptional dedication to their communities through sustained volunteerism, civic engagement, and social work that goes beyond their formal duties.

Among the recipients of this award was Captain Rey Nerio Garcia-Salas Vasquez.

This important recognition highlights a simple but powerful idea: service does not end when the uniform comes off.

For more than 16 years, Capt. Garcia-Salas has dedicated himself to recovering and preserving the history and memory of Latin American-origin soldiers who served in the Canadian Armed Forces during the First and Second World Wars, as well as later conflicts.

His recognition demonstrates the deep connection between the Canadian Armed Forces and the communities they serve. It also brings visibility to the positive impact and transformative leadership that our members can have within their local communities.

Initiatives such as the Celebrating Excellence Awards remind us that behind institutions are extraordinary human beings whose purpose in life is to make the world around them better—both within and beyond their official duties.

And sometimes, the most meaningful stories of service are not only found in what happens while wearing the uniform, but in what continues long after it is taken off.
